Luckily there are many ways to help you survive the day on a few hours’ sleep and keep you alert and awake.
You just need to follow a strategy or change your routine a little bit by adding the following steps to survive the day. So, let's go through each step to keep your mood, health, and brain function relatively intact and to make the best out of your day.
No1 Get more sunlight
Our natural sleep cycles follow the day and night patterns. Sunlight gives our brain an alarm that it’s the time to get up and busy ourselves in our chores and work.
If you had not slept enough the last night or hardly slept at all, the first thing you must do after waking up is to lift the curtains and allow the sunlight through your window. Or go outside for a quick ten-minute walk to bask yourself in sunlight.
If sunlight is not an option, turn on all the lights in the room to cue your brain to be up and active and its not the time to be in bed.
No2 Stay hydrated
The next thing you must do after waking up from a few hours' sleep is to drink water. Water is a proven energy drink that helps to keep you awake and energized. We are sometimes feeling fatigued when waking up because of dehydration.
So, the more water we drink, the more active and awake we feel. Try to drink eight to ten glasses of water as the major component of our body is water. The more we stay hydrated, the fresher we will feel.
No 3 Get a cold shower
After a few hours’ sleep the night before, your brain will be in an inactive phase even after waking up.
A cold shower helps to stimulate your body. So, if you are living in a warm country, try to take a cold shower in the morning. It will help to stimulate your brain and will wake you up.
If you feel sleepy during the day, splash cold water on your face in the restroom at work. Or if ice cubes are available then keep them on your temple or wrists. It will give your brain a sudden shock to stay awake and will prevent you from falling asleep on your desk.
No 4 Warm-up your blood
People living in colder regions of the world don’t worry because we have a replacement for a cold shower, especially for you. Every one of us has heard that exercise is a great way to stay up and awake.
It boosts our energy, speeds up the metabolism, and increases the adrenaline hormone circulation in our blood through circulation. It supplies more oxygen to the cells especially the muscles to follow chemical reactions happening in our body during exercise.
So, in short, a workout is the best way to wake up your mind and body, and to get better blood circulation and oxygen flow to your tissues.

No5 Have a good breakfast
The next important step to help you survive your day with a few hours’ sleep is your breakfast. Prioritize your meal and be selective in what you eat. Avoid going for snacks or simple sugar and carbs in the breakfast.
Try to incorporate more protein in any form you like in your breakfast. Whether in the form of hard-boiled eggs or some leftover veggies and meat. As proteins and complex carbs provide you more energy that you are going to need for the rest of your day.
No6 Have a coffee
Before leaving for work or starting the daily house chores make yourself a coffee first. It will quickly boost up your energy level and is a great tool to survive during the day after a few hours’ sleep the night before.
Coffee not only helps you feel more energized but also gives a kick-start to your brain by binding with your brain’s nerve receptors. This binding gives your pituitary gland an emergency call to release the adrenaline.
That helps you keep active and alert and stop sleep hangovers. But be patient with your caffeine doses as overdosing will just make you agitated instead of energizing. And avoid taking coffee in late afternoons as it will disturb your sleep cycle for the next night too.
No7 Take a power nap
The human body is designed in a way that if your sleep deprive your body; it will start feeling energy deprived. The afternoon energy lulls are something that everyone faces.
So, if you are already sleep-deprived, these hangovers are going to be more intense than usual. So, try to take a power nap if possible.
Even if you don’t fall into a deep sleep at this time, just closing your eyes can have a very relaxing effect on your brain and body. Just set your alarm, close your eyes and rest for at least twenty minutes. It will do wonders.
No8 Listen to music
During the day if you feel dizzy or start falling asleep, listen to your favorite tunes. It will help to stimulate your brain and will help you keep going. Try to sing with the song as it will activate your cognitive abilities along with hearing, that will further help in awakening your brain.
No9 Turn-up the fans and lights
We all have experienced that a warm and cozy environment accelerates mental fatigue. So, if you are already sleep-deprived because of few hours of sleep, this such environment will trigger your sleep more.
